I completely ditched my Windows XP on my old laptop (with a faulty cd-rom drive) and decided to just install GNU/Linux on it. No dual-boot, just plain GNU/Linux. I want to see if I can be productive when using Linux. First I tried installing OpenSuse 10.1, at first I'm having some trouble with partitioning and then when I finally figured it out, the installation comes to a halt probably because of the cd-rom.
Next, I tried Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake, I can't even get the live cd working because of some trouble, again reading the cd.
Fedora Core 5 is the other distribution on hand. And what do you know, It didn't encounter any problem reading the installation cd's. FC5 didn't recognize the other peripherals specifically the card-reader and modem. I knew from past installations that as of now Linux will have some problems detecting it. Good thing I can access the internet thru its ethernet port.
That's it for now. I'll be hacking this box from time to time, to understand the system and be productive just like when I'm using my other box with WindowsXP on it.
